Sven Olson, MD

Dr. Sven Olson is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Program Director of the section of classical hematology at Oregon Health & Science University. He hails from Madison, Wisconsin, where he earned a degree in biology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He then earned his M.D. at the Medical College of Wisconsin with the distinction of Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his internal medicine residency and hematology/oncology fellowship training at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, OR, with the distinction of Chief Fellow. Dr. Olson’s academic interests include thrombosis & hemostasis and medical education. He enjoys teaching about hematology for the medical and PA schools as well several residency and fellowship programs at OHSU. His work has been published in Blood, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Thrombosis & Haemostasis, American Journal of Hematology, and the European Journal of Hematology. Dr. Olson has also received national awards through the Hemostasis & Thrombosis Research Society and American Society of Hematology for his academic and educational accomplishments.


Joseph Shatzel, MD

Dr. Joseph Shatzel is an R01-funded Assistant Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Engineering at Oregon Health & Science University. He was raised in Buffalo, NY, where he attended medical school. He completed his internal medicine residency at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, NH, where he was awarded the Chairman's Award for excellence in teaching. Dr. Shatzel currently practices as a classical hematologist at OHSU and serves as co-director of clinical research for the department of biomedical engineering. Dr. Shatzel holds an NIH R01 grant investigating thrombotic and hemostatic issues associated with intravascular medical devices, specifically examining the contact activation pathway. Dr. Shatzel has published extensively in the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis, with manuscripts featured in Blood, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Transfusion, the New England Journal of Medicine and UpToDate.

Derrick Tao, MD

Dr. Derrick Tao is currently completing an immuno-oncology fellowship at Providence Cancer Institute in Portland, OR. Dr. Tao grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where he earned a degree in Chemistry from UC Berkeley. He decided to pursue medicine while working in cancer research at Brigham and Women's Hospital, eventually matriculating at the OHSU School of Medicine where he earned his MD and went on to complete internal medicine residency, during which time he was awarded the “Resident Scholarship Impact Award” for his extensive research accomplishments in hematology/oncology and health policy. Dr. Tao’s work has been published in JAMA Internal Medicine, Blood, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Precision Oncology, and The Lancet Oncology.
